On January 19th, the 209th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allen Poe, old groomer Davinius awoke with a start. He’d been dreaming of a flower strewn meadow, where under a blazing sun he’d been picking bouquets of lupine and and bundles of sage with the pretty girl from the village. Now as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes he saw instead of flowers, 5 inches of new snow on the meadow and more flakes falling from a leaden sky. As the vision of the pretty girl from the village and the scent of sage and lupine faded from his mind he called out…
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
