Frosty day at ski areas…

On January 17th, the one hundred and seventy second birthday of illustrator A.B. Frost, the ski trails at Alturas Lake, Park Creek and the Stanley Park all looked really great. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

WIPE OUT!

On Monday, the 16th of January, the birthday of Don Bogle, guitarist and founding member of Tacoma, Washington’s historic surf rock heros, The Ventures, Walk Don’t Run to the Alturas Lake ski area where the skiing should be pretty good. The same goes for Park Creek where conditions should be perfect to Ram-Bunk-Shush.

Good trails, warm temps…

On Friday the 13th, Alturas and Park Creek trails should provide adequate skiing opportunities. At Park Creek, trails were graded on Thursday to remove concave irritation. At Alturas, all trails to the east of the creek were groomed with classic tracks and skate lanes and the remaining trail from the bridge to lake was rolled.

Trails rolled at Alturas and Park Creek

On Tuesday, the 10th of January, let’s celebrate the birthday of Donald Fagen.
“Snowbound
Let’s sleep in today
Wake me up
When the wolves come out to play”
At Alturas Lake all trails were rolled through 6 to 8 inches of new snow and some classic tracks were added with the ginzu groomer on the east side of the creek. At Park Creek, rolling was scheduled as well and we assume that the results were positive.

To be fairyour honorMercury was indeed in retrograde.”

On January 7th, ski trails at Alturas Lake and Park Creek have been groomed and should provide very good skiing opportunities. However, classic tracks may be missing from some trails due to multiple mechanical breakdowns. We reckon that our string of breakdowns is due to the overwhelming effect of retrograde motion by Mercury and Mars. Work on snowmobiles at both areas is scheduled for Saturday and our valiant Groomers have been provided with spray bottles of Mercury retrograde balancer.

Ski trails good to go for 2023…

Ski trails at both Park Creek and Alturas Lake were groomed on Saturday and Sunday and will be regroomed on Monday. The Sun is out. The temperature is frigid. Good times are yours for the taking. Don’t worry, be happy.

Last day of the year…

On the thirtieth, all trails at Park Creek were groomed for skate and classic, except for Larkspur, the least favored child of groomer Thaddeus Maximus. At Alturas Lake, all trails were rolled on Friday and are scheduled for a ginzu skate and classic drag on Saturday.

Trails packed after the storm..

On the 28th of the month, all trails at Alturas Lake were rolled, while at Park Creek, all trails were packed and 16 fallen trees were cut off the trails. What a super effort by our most excellent and heroic groomers.

My true love sent to me four calling birds…

December 28th is the Fourth Day Of Christmas, as well as the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This day is celebrated in Spain like April fools day here – however, the following is not a silly Joke from some Spanish calling bird! Ski trails in the Sawtooth Valley are covered with 8 to 12 inches of wet heavy frozen snow… maybe more. A ski sojourn is therefore not recommended. Valiant groomers Thaddeus and Chadeus Maximus have plans to beat down the slush at Alturas and Park Creek, but who knows when or if they will succeed? And one last serious announcement – grooming at the Stanley City Park is scheduled to start soon, no joke.

The shortest and coldest of days…

December 21st, the winter solstice, was an extremely stormy windy day in the Sawtooth Valley, with wind blown snow covering ski trails to a depth of at least 8 inches and drifting higher. Amazingly, the next day, Chaddeus Maximus ventured forth at Alturas Lake and rolled all trails there, even though the temperature never rose above zero degrees – a feat displaying classical heroism and devotion to duty. Davinius, warming himself by his wood stove and slurping a bowl of gruel, could only say, “You’re a better man than I am, Gunga-Din.” At the Park Creek trails, where winds gusted to 35 mph and the temperature hovered around -20 degrees, Jaydeus the younger displayed excellent judgement by just staying home. He may be able to groom some on Friday, weather permitting.

Not a creature was stirring, not even an elf…

On the 19th of December, the feast of Saint Nicholas, the Sawtooth cross country ski trails were looking very good, especially when one considers the time of the season. At Park Creek, all trails except for Larkspur were just freshly groomed. At Alturas, trails also were in really nice shape, except for North Cabin, which was perfectly primitive,

No Evidence Of Alien Ski Activity On Earth So Far, Says Pentagon’s UFO Report

Although temperatures in the Sawtooth Valley have been almost as cold as on the dark side of the moon, grooming has continued at the Park Creek and Alturas Lake Ski areas. Alturas trails are still soft but getting better with new ginzu and classic tracks on trails to the east of the creek and progress on the western side anticipated to push corduroy and classic through to the lake on Saturday. As of Friday, that section of trail was just soft corduroy sans classic. At Park Creek, new groomer, Jaydius the younger, was showing the right stuff this last week, rolling, grading and ginzuing trails to their best condition all season.

Trails continue to improve after the storm…

On Wednesday, the 14th, Camas and Skyrocket were groomed at Park Creek and the stuck drag was unstuck. At Alturas, the Trail to the Lake was rolled and North Cabin was opened with two snowmobile passes. A ginzu treatment is scheduled for Thursday at each ski area.

Monkey day!!!

December 14th is International Monkey Day so we encourage you to get out and monkey around and celebrate monkeys, lemurs, tarsiers, apes and other non-human primates. It is a day to raise awareness about all the different types of monkey in the world whilst also highlighting the issues that they face on a daily basis. On Tuesday all trails at Park Creek were graded. Today the plan was to take out the ginzu and also to retrieve the drag that was left stuck in a snowbank. At Alturas on Tuesday, all trails to the east of the creek were rolled and today the plan was to reestablish a link to the lake without getting stuck there in the deep drifting snow. After the big weekend dump, getting stuck has been an all too common occurrence.

I stood there quaking with angst – and I felt as though a vast, endless Scream passed through nature

On Monday, December 12th, the 159th birthday of Edvard Munch, progress was made reclaiming cross country ski trails in the Sawtooth Valley after a weekend of heavy snowfall. At Park Creek, all trails were looking really good after repeated rolling and grading by Thaddeus Maximus and Jaydius the younger. At Alturas Lake, where the snowfall was heavier, Chadeus Maximus compacted and rolled all trails to the east of the creek except for two small sections of South Loop. On Tuesday, Davinius plans going over those trails and filling in the missing sections of South Loop if he can find them.. He is, however, still hesitant to proceed on to the the Lake until the new snow firms up or we receive our new tracked ATV grooming machines. With Galena Pass now open, we are hoping that could happen later this week. It would make things a lot easier and perhaps instill some confidence in that doddering old fool Davinius.

Big dump covers trails…

On Sunday, the 11th day of December and the 345th day of the year, new snow accumulations of a foot and more have made skiing the Sawtooth cross country trails unadvisable.

Snow begins to fall on freshly groomed trails…

All trails at Alturas lake and Park Creek ski areas we rolled with corduroy over the last two days. The skiing.should be fine for a bit as new falling snow heralds the appearance of a new winter storm. The national weather service has warned that you may want to stay home and play with your toys there.

Broken drive shaft, screwed up gear box, eclipse of mars, another blizzard on the way, uncorrectable website typos, and other problems you don’t need to hear that keep Davinius awake at night.

And now the good news … Park Creek trails are looking great! Trail compaction and rolling begins again at Alturas as back up snow-mo thrown into service. Broken snowmobile arrives at shop for repair. New tracked grooming ATV’s almost ready for delivery. Red planet reappears! Mother Nature rules! ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!

Help on the way…

At Park Creek all trails have been rolled but are still rather soft. Ginzu grooming is scheduled to follow soon as our rookie groomer there learns the ropes from old grooming top dog Thaddeus.
At Alturas Lake we have contacted an legendary woodsman and local hero who very kinky responded immediately to our “Beck” and call, and is at this very moment on his way to retrieve our broken down. snowmobile and haul it to the shop. We hope to dig up an interim replacement machine Wednesday and get back to it. Davinius has been reminded that it is still very early in our season, that things usually work out fine and that he should not lose any more sleep worrying about it.

Holy smokes Batman, what do we do now?

Upon further investigation of our mysterious Kapow!!! snowmobile shut down, it does not appear to be a broken belt but something more serious that will necessitate moving the machine into a shop for service. We are working on getting a replacement groomer to Alturas but for the immediate future the trails are covered with 5 inches of new snow.

Breakdown…

On A. Dry cold Saturday at the Alturas Lake Ski area, the Trail to the Lake as far as the junction, Over the Hill and South Loop got one new pass with the ginzu groomer, knocking down blown drifts and adding classic tracks. At that point grooming came to an abrupt stop with a rather loud kapow!!! We will return on Sunday to try to figure it out. We are hoping it is just a damaged drive belt.

Progress on all fronts…

All trails at Alturas Lake and Park Creek have been compacted and rolled. Davinius hopes to ginzu in some classic tracks to the lake today, building on the great base Chadeus Maximus laid down yesterday.

Workin’ on it…

The storm has passed, the sky is blue, the snow is deep. We are working at compacting more than a foot of snow that has blown across the trails at Park Creek and Alturas Lake. You probably should wait to ski the trails until they are in better shape, Our grooming team has pulled on their snow pants and are working to restore service at both ski areas.
