On Sunday, March 11th, grooming for skate and classic took place on Over the Hill, the Lake Trail as far as the creek and South Loop. On Thursday, the 15th, skate lanes on those trails and the backside of Wapiti were regroomed, however, a pounding shower of sleet and snow quickly swept over the valley and trail upgrades were short lived. On Friday the trail to the lake is scheduled to be groomed again. This could be the last weekend of grooming at Alturas.
On Saturday, the 10th of March, all trails at Alturas lake were groomed for skate and classic except for North Cabin. On Friday and Saturday the trails at Park Creek were also groomed.
On Thursday, March 8th, International Women’s Day, a light snow was falling on the Sawtooth Valley. By noon an inch of new snow had accumulated. On Wednesday, skate lanes on Over the Hill, the Trail to the Lake and South Loop were touched up and Wapiti and Sheep Thrills Trails were compacted with the snowmobile and then double rolled. That left only North Cabin ungroomed.
On Tuesday, the 6th of March, the snow was brilliant, the sun was glorious. Over the Hill, South Loop and the Trail to the Lake were groomed for skate and classic. The trail from the bridge to the lake is a little narrow but otherwise good. The two feet of snow that fell last week still stands tall and defiant to the sides of the groomed trail and resists taming.
Don’t miss the 16th annual Sawtooth ski Festival this weekend. Highway 75 over Galena Summit is super wide, flat and clear. The ski trails are being worked on, trying to pack down all the new snow… Deep drifts…
