A bit of new snow on Alturas Ski Trails

A bit of new snow on Alturas Ski Trails

On January 10th, the Trail to Lake, Over the Hill, South Loop, and Wapiti, were groomed at the Alturas Lake Ski Area. Although only three quarters of an inch new snow had fallen overnight, it was just enough to reset classic tracks on the Trail to the Lake and Over the Hill. More snow is expected on Thursday.

Alturas & Park Creek groomed

Alturas & Park Creek groomed

All trails at Park Creek were groomed on Sunday. At Alturas all trails were groomed on Saturday and Sunday. Davinius and the pretty girl from the village tested those trails on Sunday afternoon and unequivocally declared that the snow was fast and the skating was great. Classic tracks for the most part looked pretty good and fast as well. Snow scheduled for overnight will hopefully cover the last vestiges of sagebrush and allow for fresh classic. in the meantime, the skiing is excellent… HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

WISE MAN SKI DAY

WISE MAN SKI DAY

On a grey Saturday, the 6th of January, celebrated as the Epiphany or the Feast of the Three Kings and also the birthday of French artist Paul Gustave Dore’, temperatures in the Sawtooth Valley were hovering around 33 degrees. Ski Trails at Park Creek were rated a 10 on Friday and Alturas got a 10 pointer for overall gestalt on Thursday. More good news… despite a couple of thin areas, the trail at Stanley’s Pioneer Park is groomed and looking pretty good. Our 3 grooming wise men have scheduled grooming for today at Park Creek and Alturas. One might expect generally good but somewhat wet snow conditions until temperatures drop again. At Alturas, the flooded area on North Cabin Trail appears to have frozen over. Watch for ice. Over the Hill, the Trail to the Lake as far as the Old Bridge crossing and Sheep Thrills were groomed Friday.

On January 3rd, the tenth day of Christmas, Lord Davinius leapt into service and regroomed skate lanes at the Alturas Lake Ski Area. Even though the corduroy was littered with tiny snow pebbles in places and the classic tracks were a bit thin in places and the sage brush showed through in places and Alturas Lake Creek began flooding into the lowlands of North Cabin Creek Trail, where even lords a-leapin’ might not find a way around the wet spot, the trails were still rated a perfect 10 by wise old groomer Davinius, since the overall gestalt could not have been better.
