WISE MAN SKI DAY

WISE MAN SKI DAY

On a grey Saturday, the 6th of January, celebrated as the Epiphany or the Feast of the Three Kings and also the birthday of French artist Paul Gustave Dore’, temperatures in the Sawtooth Valley were hovering around 33 degrees. Ski Trails at Park Creek were rated a 10 on Friday and Alturas got a 10 pointer for overall gestalt on Thursday. More good news… despite a couple of thin areas, the trail at Stanley’s Pioneer Park is groomed and looking pretty good. Our 3 grooming wise men have scheduled grooming for today at Park Creek and Alturas. One might expect generally good but somewhat wet snow conditions until temperatures drop again. At Alturas, the flooded area on North Cabin Trail appears to have frozen over. Watch for ice. Over the Hill, the Trail to the Lake as far as the Old Bridge crossing and Sheep Thrills were groomed Friday.

On January 3rd, the tenth day of Christmas, Lord Davinius leapt into service and regroomed skate lanes at the Alturas Lake Ski Area. Even though the corduroy was littered with tiny snow pebbles in places and the classic tracks were a bit thin in places and the sage brush showed through in places and Alturas Lake Creek began flooding into the lowlands of North Cabin Creek Trail, where even lords a-leapin’ might not find a way around the wet spot, the trails were still rated a perfect 10 by wise old groomer Davinius, since the overall gestalt could not have been better.

Over the long holiday weekend, ski trails at Park Creek and Alturas lake were super!!! Skiers on Monday reported the best conditions seen this year! Need we say more? Highly recommended.

SKI TRAILS GROOMED AND GREAT!

Saturday, December 30th,  all trails at Park Creek were groomed for skate and classic. Enthusiastic skiers applauded the excellent trail conditions and good vibes. At Alturas Lake all trails except for Wapiti and Sheep Thrills were freshly groomed and skiing really well. Those two trails were lightly covered by new snow and were reportedly excellent retreats for lovers of pristine winterscapes. On the Trail to the Lake, wild western wind blown snow was filling in some open meadow classic tracks.   Meanwhile, in the enchanted forest,  a new route circumventing a series of scary leaning trees was opened with the help of el Barbarosa, the woodsman. After a wild time Saturday night of rocking out to Muzzie and Mickey and the Motorcars at the new village dancehall, Alturas groomer Davinius and Park Creek’s first man Adam were planning a Sunday afternoon touch up to the trails.

On December 28th, Over the Hill. the Trail to the Lake as far as the bridge junction and South Loop were groomed at the Alturas Lake Ski Area . Temperatures in the high 30’s resulted in warm sticky snow that piled in glommy heaps in front of the ginzu groomer and an overheating snowmachine.  Although usually a passionate and dedicated groomer, old Davinius decided to leave his frustrating task behind for a day of sledding with the pretty girl from the village.  More grooming is scheduled for Saturday at Park Creek and Alturas.

Kultur in Winter

Kultur in Winter

On December 27th, the birthday of the great French artist and illustrator, HermannPaul, Sawtooth Valley skiers are celebrating Kultur in Winter. All ski trails at Park Creek and Alturas Lake were groomed over the long holiday weekend and more grooming is scheduled for today. Skiing conditions are “just fine” . New snow has refreshed trails and signs of sagebrush are receding from our meadows and memories.

ADDENDUM 12/28/17: All trails at Alturas were, in fact, groomed on Wednesday and skiing great!!!
