On the last day of 2014, the Trail to the Lake, Over the Hill and South Loop were groomed for classic and skate skiing. The trail from the bridge to the lake was a bit soft in the afternoon but no doubt hardened over night as the temperature dipped to about 13 degrees below zero. Wapiti and Sheep Thrills skating lanes were also groomed and were very pretty but also rather soft and narrow.
Alturas Lake has just now fully frozen, so should you ski out, make a point of listening for the the ice beginning to sing its magical early winter melody.
