On December 17th, trails at Park Creek and Alturas Lake were rolled in honor of this week’s Saturnalia-mania and the grand conjunction with Jupiter. Does it get any better than this for astrological revelers, planetary party goers and lords of misrule? Could this be the beginning of a Golden Age of plenty and peace? Ski the trails and find out for yourself. On Friday, December 18th, more grooming is scheduled for both ski areas to further compact the 4 to 6 inches of beautiful, luxurious new snow that we can only describe as out of this world!
On Monday the 14th of December, all trails at Alturas Lake were groomed for skate and classic to the east of the creek and for skate without classic tracks to the west. Skiers and other slip and slide creatures have described the trails as most excellent.
On December 6th, the 1,677th anniversary of the death of St. Nicholas, ski trails at Alturas Lake were looking good. Over the Hill and the Trail to the Lake were ginzu groomed and picnic tables were added to the sunny hilltop festival site. At Park Creek, Adam, the first man of grooming, was able to get all the trails rolled out. He groomed Lupine, Shooting Star, and Camas with classic tracks. Unfortunately, someone drove down Dry Creek Road sometime before it was closed for the season, so there are deep ruts on portions of Skyrocket, Sego, and Larkspur. It may take more snow to get it leveled back out because it’s a mess at the moment. Sadly, St. Nicholas, the patron saint of of sailors, archers, merchants, repentant thieves, prostitutes, pawnbrokers, children, brewers, unmarried people, and students is now long dead, but his spirit skis on.
December 5th, 2020 is the 2081st anniversary of Cicero’s fourth Catiline oration, well as the 87th anniversary of the ratification of the 21st amendment abolishing prohibition. Freedom lovers will certainly enjoy celebrating this great day with a ski at the Alturas Lake Ski Area. Wapiti trail does have some aspen twigs poking though the snow and North Cabin trail is rather rough with some dangerous stumps to avoid. Otherwise, the trails are in really good condition for skate and classic. In addition, our most excellent groomer, Chadeus Maximus, will be there, grooming out any slight flaws that could annoy you on this otherwise perfect day. Feel the freedom! Enjoy the sunshine! Kick and glide!
On December 2nd, the 129th birthday of German expressionist artist Otto Dix, all trails at Alturas Lake except for Sheep Thrills were groomed. In addition to smooth skate lanes, classic tracks were added to South Loop, Over the Hill, and most of the Trail to the Lake. For the low amount of snow available to push about, trails looked remarkably good but trail edges are soft. At Park Creek some initial rough roll out of trails has begun.
