At Alturas Lake on Monday, the 18th, Chad groomed the Trail to the Lake, Over the Hill, North Cabin and South Loop. On Tuesday, March 19th, yet another clear, beautiful, sunny day greeted skiers at the Sawtooth Valley’s cross country ski areas. But since it marks the 155th anniversary of the birth of cowboy artist Charles Marrion Russell, we found ourselves reminded of blowing snow and the great blizzards of 1886 and 1887. At times, it is said, a rider couldn’t see his horse’s head in front of him, let alone a path out of the storm. In Russell’s painting “Lost in a Snowstorm, We are Friends” he portrays a group of Indians and two immigrant cowpokes who are all driven by the snow to treat one another as friends. At Alturas Lake and Park Creek we celebrate the snow that brings people together of different backgrounds and cultures, different classes, different political and religious beliefs, skiers, snowshoers, dogs and humans, without asking who is right or wrong, native or immigrant. Can’t we just be friends? (Of course, since you’ve gotta draw the line somewhere – no horses, walkers, snowmobiles or snow bikes please…)

On St. Patrick’s Day we are proud to guarantee the ski trails at Alturas Lake and Park Creek to be absolutely snake free! At Park Creek, Daniel, the Barbarossa. will be grooming this week while first man Adam is on vacation. At Alturas, Chaddeus Maximus groomed the Trail to the Lake and North Cabin Trail on Friday and was returning to groom trails to the east of the Creek on Sunday. Chad took over all grooming duties at Alturas for the remainder of the season after Davinius abruptly quit, having taken on a new position as boating coach at Stanford University, along with moonlighting as a major internet influencer, signing a contract with Tresemme to promote their beard care product line. His new motto – “You call it facial hair, I call it awesomeness escaping through my face.” In response to this shocking news, all we can say is, “Goodbye, good luck, and good riddance!”

On March 8th, International Women’s day, we salute the women of our community and especially the women of the Sawtooth Ski Club, without whom a lot less would get done and it wouldn’t be much fun anyway. Would there be a Ski Festival this weekend without them? No way! Sure, the men help too, but would the Stanley Community Building have been set up and decorated with such refined taste in preparation for the silent auction and dinner on Saturday night? NO! In the words of Harry Belafonte… Man Smart, Woman Smarter…
And not me but the people they say

This weekend we are determined to host the recently postponed 17th annual Sawtooth Ski Festival come snow, hell or high water. At 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9th at the Park Creek Ski Trails, homemade chili and treats will await eager participants at the annual Big Fun Poker Run. At 5:30 Saturday evening at the Stanley Community Building, Chef Sean will present a delicious Holy Mole Chicken dinner featuring authentic Mexican Mole smuggled across an unfenced section of the southern border on a real mule! At the same time an amazing silent auction will take place. Many local businesses, arts and crafts people and friends of the club have donated art, wonderful services, lovely things, ski and fashion accessories, cool vacation lodgings, restaurant certificates, ski passes and deliciously fantastic items to the auction. We are not kidding when we say we’ve got some good stuff this year! At 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 10th at the Alturas Lake Ski Trails Soup Kitchen Social, enjoy great skiing along with with trailside soup and cookies. All events are donation based, so be sure to bring your check book or cash for the donation jars. The Sawtooth Ski Festival is our only fundraising event of the year. Join us to have some fun and to promote quality cross country ski trails at Park Creek and Alturas Lake.

Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated groomers, after days of shoveling just to get to the ski area and then digging grooming equipment out of deep snowy holes, driving off into dead ends looking for lost trails, digging through drifts while groaning and cussing and filling in scary tree wells while laughing and wondering at the beauty of trees, their efforts are beginning to show results. At Alturas the trails to the east of the creek are looking great. Chad has groomed out a firm hard surface pleasing to classic and skate skiers alike. Old man Davinius is working on the Trail to the Lake and North Cabin and should have skiable products by Sunday eve. And at Park Creek, Adam is rumored to be driving round and round, also hoping to have all trails looking good on the week end.

With the all three routes into the Sawtooth Valley blocked by avalanches and windblown snow, with grooming equipment stuck in snowbanks and ski trails impassable, with frequent electrical outages, no food for the banquet and the wolf at the door, the Sawtooth Ski Club has announced the postponement of the 17th annual Sawtooth Ski Festival for one week. This is an unprecedented turn of events but it seemed like the right thing to do. All festivities are being rescheduled for the weekend of March 9th and 10th, same times, same places. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the indomitable, never say die spirit of festival workers was forced to yield, powerless in the face of untamed nature.
