TRAILS VERY GOOD AT ALTURAS LAKE

TRAILS VERY GOOD AT ALTURAS LAKE

On the 15th day of the year 2015 in the Gregorian calendar, skiing conditions are reported to be excellent at the Alturas Lake ski area. On Wednesday, the 14th, Timmy, grooming acolyte to old grooming master Davinius, laid down some excellent corduroy and classic tracks on South Loop, the Trail to the Lake and Over the Hill trails. Sheep Thrills and Wapiti were groomed for skating and flat tracking on Monday and still looked great. With Timmy doing so well with his grooming chores, Davinius is contemplating retirement to a more eremitic life on this the feast day of St. Paul the first Christian Hermit. Paul lived in a cave in the desert .  Eating only dates from a lone palm tree near the cave and half a loaf of bread delivered daily by a raven, he wore a robe of woven palm leaves and lived to the ripe old age of 109. When he died he was buried by Saint Anthony, with the help of two lions who dug his grave. We can only wish Davinius the best of luck in his new endeavors.

SNOWY GREY DAY AT ALTURAS

SNOWY GREY DAY AT ALTURAS

On Sunday, the 11th of January, morning temperatures were in the 20’s at the Alturas Lake ski area. Light snow fell from a low grey sky and any view of mountains was obscured by a low hanging mist. On Saturday, North Cabin Creek Trail was upgraded with a ginzu skate lane and Sheep Thrills was groomed for skate and classic. All other trails were still in good shape.

COLD TRAILS GROOMED AT ALTURAS

COLD TRAILS GROOMED AT ALTURAS

On Friday morning, at the Alturas Lake ski area,  a frosty cold morning temperature of 2 degrees transmogrified the rising mist and coated the pine trees as well as the long white beard of Davinius with a heavy rime.  The ginzu groomers were rendered almost useless in the cold, their delicate mechanisms frozen solid. Timmy was able to nurse them Over the Hill, along the creek and up and down Wapiti before retreating to Stanley. Rather than further fighting the resolute cold, wily Davinius returned later that afternoon with the pretty girl from the village and together they groomed to the lake, smoothing out the kick scarred trail and laying down some respectable classic tracks. While North Cabin and Sheep Thrills looked a bit rough, skiing should be excellent on the other trails this Saturday.

Timmy and the Galilean moons

Timmy and the Galilean moons

On January 7th, neophyte groomer Timmy ventured forth onto the Alturas Lake ski trails for the first time without the watchful accompaniment of grooming master Davinius. He had been instructed to not only lay down some first class corduroy, but also while doing so, to contemplate the significance of Galileo Galilei’s discovery of the four largest moons of Jupiter on that same date in the year 1610. Galileo’s discovery dealt a serious blow to the then accepted geocentric view that the earth was the center of the universe with everything orbiting around it. A good groomer must question the similar egocentric view that everything revolves around his own personal ego and learn to serve the greater public good. Skiers reported the resulting skating lanes on the Trail to the Lake to be most excellent and the new classic tracks on Over the Hill, Wapiti, and along the Creekside Trail to be particularly groovy.

ALTURAS TRAILS ROLLED

ALTURAS TRAILS ROLLED

On the 5th of January approximately 5 inches of heavy new snow fell on the Alturas Lake ski trails. On Tuesday, the 6th, all of those trails were groomed. After getting the multiknived ginzu groomer stuck in the glommy snow, our dedicated grooming team pulled out the lighter weight roller/compactor, looping back again and again, never deviating from their set course, until finally all was good and all was corduroy. No classic tracks were set.

PLANETS ALIGN OVER SKI AREA

PLANETS ALIGN OVER SKI AREA

On Sunday, the 4th of January, 2015, expect to experience slight periods of weightlessness and maximal energy flux as Pluto aligns with Jupiter and Cancer and Capricorn are conjoined under the full wolf moon, propelling you forward into the new year and possibly down the ski trail as well. By balancing this unusual astrological tug and pull, you may experience incredibly powerful kicks and increased glide at the Alturas lake ski area. On Saturday, all trails were groomed and classic tracks were set on the Trail to the Lake, Over the Hill and South Loop. North Cabin Creek was just packed  for the first time on Friday and rolled on Saturday and might be best described as navigable but rough, so do remember to watch your speed on its winding sharp corners during this planetary alignment.
