In the words of Zen Monk Shunryu Suzuki, “Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure. Unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it. Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer.”
Saturday morning, leaving a dead snowmobile behind on the Alturas Lake ski trails and walking to the highway, old groomer Davinius was suffering. Just two days before he had been so pleased with how great the trails looked after a ginzu grooming. Now they were glazed over, hard and icy, with shifting patches of grapple creating amoebic shapes that settled into comfortable depressions on the windswept meadows.
But, you know, everything changes, and on Sunday, Davinius awoke with a warm feeling of perfect composure… an inch or two of new snow has already fallen, covering the ice, a professional investigation into the snowmobile’s charging system malfunction was underway, and morning coffee with his valentine, the pretty girl from the village, was a particularly good brew.

Skiing should be good at the Alturas Lake ski trails where Wapiti, Over the Hill, South Loop and the trail to the lake as far as the bridge junction were spruced up with a ginzu pass over skate lanes on Wednesday. On Thursday the skate lane from the bridge to the lake will be fluffed up as well.

On Saturday and Sunday, all of the ski trails at Alturas Lake were groomed and regroomed until they were most excellent. Happy skiers described them as first-rate, splendid, awesome, magical, wicked, killer, hunky-dory and out of this world. More work to flatten drifted edges, widen narrow spots and cut low hanging tree limbs will continue this week in an attempt to make them even better.

On February 6th, the Sawtooth Ski Club is pleased to celebrate the National Day of the Sámi People, the indigenous Finno-Ugrics of the far north, reputed to be the inventors of skiing and our favorite folk fashion dandies. At Alturas Lake, Sheep Thrills trail was widened, flattened, compacted and groomed for skate and classic on Friday and looked super good. All other trails to the east of the Creek were groomed except for Wapiti, scheduled for Saturday grooming along with the trail from the bridge to the lake and North Cabin. At Park Creek on Friday, everything was groomed for skating and classic tracks were added to Lupine, Shooting Star and Camas Loop. Randy, the grooming Yankeeforker, had to abandon his equipment to an all enveloping snow drift at the end of the day and walk out to his car, but he swore he’d be back on Saturday to dig it out and start all over again. That’s the kind of dedication ya’ just gotta’ dig and then dig it some more. Dig it?
